Douglas Fir

General description : The heartwood is a light reddish-brown which shows distinct growth rings on plain sawn timber due to the contrast between earlywood and latewood. The wood is straight grained with uniform medium texture.

Strength : Douglas Fir has high stiffness, crushing and bending strength and does not readily expand and contract with the weather.

Durability: Moderate.

Hemlock

Genral description: The heartwood is pale brown with darker coloured latewood producing well marked growth rings on plain sawn surfaces. The wood is straight grained with a fine and even texture.

Strength: Hemlock has medium bending and crushing strength, it resembles pine properties but is overall a stronger timber.

Durability: Durable

Typical Uses: Timber framing, staircases, roofing and subfloori

British Larch

General description: The resinous heartwood is pale red-brown to brick red in colour, with clearly marked annual rings. The wood is straight grained, contains knots, and has a fine uniform texture.

Strength: British larch is very tough and durable, perfect if likely to be bumped and scrapped.

Siberian Larch

General description: The colour of Siberian larch can vary from a dark brown to a straw colour, similar to pine. It should not be confused with the British larch as the knots in Siberian larch are a lighter grey colour and tend to stay solid even after drying and machining.

Strength: Due to it being a slow growing Softwood it gives a high density hard finish.

Durability: Extremely Durable.

Southern Yellow Pine

General description: The heartwood varies from creamy-white to light straw-brown, or light reddish-brown. The wood is not particularly resinous, but resin ducts produce short, brown-coloured, thin lines on longitudinal surfaces. The grain is straight, and the texture is fine and even, planed surfaces have a satin-like appearance.
